F. A. Rohrbach builds Arts Walk
The Allentown Arts Walk is a revitalization plan, envisioned by the Allentown Parking Authority, which incorporates a multifunctional corridor designed to connect visual and performing arts venues. Design features of the Allentown Arts Walk include pedestrian walkways, a parking/performance area, seating areas and concrete pedestals designed to display artistic sculptures by local artists. Competed in October 2003 the Allentown Arts Walk uses colors and patterns in the concrete paving to define space and use for the areas.
The Allentown Parking Authority insisted that concrete be used as the primary building material for its strength and durability. The architectural design, created by The Architectural Studio, enhanced multiple colors and textures. Six different colors and three textures were used to define space and function areas.
Phase I of the Allentown Arts Walk is broken into two distinct areas; the pedestrian walk and the parking/performance areas. The pedestrian walk areas consist of concrete stairs, planning and seating areas, and integral colored and patterned concrete walkways. The parking/performance area similarly continues the use of colored and patterned to define parking spaces and pedestrian traffic areas. Also in this area, four (4) cast-in-place concrete bench structures were constructed of integral colored concrete to assist in defining the space as well as promote recreation activities in the area.
